ROLEPLAY SAMPLE
Perhaps someone should have warned the storeowner that Lucy should not have been allowed around pets. Personally, Rose would not let Lucy around any sort of animal. But her cousin was not stupid, Rose knew. Lucy did not have a stable home life and she would not bring an animal into that lifestyle. Lucy would try to get someone else to buy a pet she could visit often though. It was a surprise she had not already surprised their grandparents with some sort of furry creature.
“Ooh,” Rose smiled at the little, playful kitten. She wondered how her father would feel about the pet. It was obvious Rose’s mother loved cats. But her father, well, not so much, “Maybe if I bought my dad that cute kitten, he’d get over his hatred for cats. And I’m sure he’d always welcome his favourite niece to come play with the kitty.” Her blue eyes twinkled with delight. Rose was not sure who her father’s favourite nice was, or if he even had one. Uncle George probably preferred Lucy. They were very similar. If Rose had an uncle who liked her best, it was probably Percy. Lucky Rose.
Rose had envied Lucy for being able to play with kittens all day until she watched her cousin provided a hunt for the owls. Gross! This would be the part of the conversation where Rose was supposed to say something such as ‘Oh, that’s yucky. But don’t feel bad. At my job, I have to do horrible things like _________.’ Unfortunately, if Rose said such a thing, aurors would be all over her like the owls on that or rats. That was the bad part about being an Unspeakable. She could not even tell her own parents about the dangers she faced every day --- or did she face dangers? You’ll never know. The punishment for sharing anything is imprisonment.
“My life?” Rose sighed. She hated talking about her life. What was she allowed to say? She was a single young adult. Her life revolved around work. She was a workaholic. Her job was just so fascinating! Sighing again, Rose continued, “Not much has changed really. Life is just the same as always. But I did narrowly miss one of those stupid muggle cameramen the other day. Don’t they have anything better to do?” And that was the trick. Shift into changing the subject so subtly that no one even noticed. The first few days of work training just were seminars about how to avoid talking at work. The most popular was divert away from the question. People liked talking about themselves. If they ask you a question, sort of answer, and then direct back to them, they would be so happy that they would start blabbing for a while. People were so obvious. That was part of Rose’s stance in the muggle and wizarding battle. They were all people. Both liked talking about each other. But Rose was not about to start discussing politics with Lucy. It was too nice to see her cousin.
