One of the first friends Garrett ever made was a boy who lived next door to his grandparents. Christian. He is Garrett’s oldest friend, and their friendship has endured much over the past fifteen or so years. Many trips on Garrett’s part, a house division while at Hogwarts, more trips, etc. Eventually, their little duo expanded into a foursome during Garrett’s first year at Hogwarts. Garrett, a Gryffindor, was paired in potions with Elysia Moran, a Slytherin. They became fast friends in spite of their house differences, adding Sadie, Elysia’s best friend, to their group at the same time. He knew that these people were his home when Elysia’s mother died. Sadie and Christian rallied, and Garrett found himself extremely touched at their efforts and doing the same. He failed out of History of Magic because, somehow, writing Elysia funny little notes to make her smile seemed more important. Hovering outside the Slytherin common room with cookies seemed worth the potential duels. The loss brought everyone closer together, and honestly he can’t imagine life without his favourite people.
Garrett considers these people like his family, and loves them unconditionally. They are, in many ways, the most stable unit he’s ever been a part of. He lived with them at Hogwarts longer than his cumulative time with his grandparents or his parents. He owls Christian, Elysia, and Sadie more often than he owls his own mother. But, being part of their little unit does have its downsides. He’s been in love with Sadie for as long as he cares to remember, but has never acted on his feelings because he’s terrified of messing up their group. He’s dated others, but could never make it work with Sadie looming over his head. Perhaps one day he’ll harness that Gryffindor bravery and make a go at it.
As mentioned, Garrett can be quite introverted, he doesn’t really share a whole lot. He is terrible for doing his own thing. Like, for example, joining the Order of Phoenix. He hasn’t told anyone yet, but Garrett always tries to do the right thing, and joining this group and fighting against purists is definitely the right thing. He’s only very recently returned to England, having left immediately after sitting his NEWTS to travel across Australia, then he spent six months with his father in Tibet counting the local yeti population... It’s been a while. But, now he’s back, and though he’s been getting better at handing out some warnings regarding his whereabouts, Garrett’s decided to make this trip home a surprise. He’s been working as a bartender at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, saving money for a trip to the Americas. Well, that's the plan anyway. Who knows how things will work out?[/ul]

So, Garrett’s joined the Order of the Phoenix. He was approached by an old friend from school almost as soon as he got back on English soil. He said yes immediately, because he feels very strongly that purists are wrong and shouldn’t be targeting muggleborns, blood traitors, or anyone who strikes their fancy. He’s got a lot of morals, and a very strong sense of right and wrong. There’s no way he could refuse. Now he just needs to break it to his friends. Perhaps after a long night of serving them free drinks... He’s been working as a bartender at the Three Broomsticks since returning home. [/ul]

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE
The fire was definitely out, or at least there were no more visible flames, but Thomas continued to rain water on the curtains and rubbish bin. They were still smoking, and better safe than sorry, right? The librarian had slipped from Thomas’ mind. He had focused on her long enough to ask her about Filch, then she was gone. Replaced with a million other things, and thoughts, and actions that might need to be taken now that a fire had been started on his watch. Which house was hiding an arsonist? Would he ever get those papers marked? Should he summon a prefect to hunt down the student who started the fire? It wasn’t until she laughed, a rather delightful sound he had to admit, that Thomas shifted his focus back to Effie.
She was gorgeous.
An absolute vision, though not one Thomas had seen before. In reality or in his visions. He would have certainly remembered. Her face was lit up with laughter, and Tom found it surprisingly endearing. At least one person was finding the hilarity in the situation, for Thomas was still feeling grumpy and more than a bit out of sorts from his vision. But, this woman’s silly, funny, laughter was contagious. Unwillingly, Thomas found the corners of his mouth creeping upwards, into a bemused smile. But she laughed for so long, and Thomas’ smile began to falter. Had the dastardly arsonist hit her with a cheering charm? But no, she found her grip on reality not long after Tom wondered if he would have to cart her off to Madam Pomfrey.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Effie,” Thomas’ replied in his quiet, calm voice. He held her gaze for a beat and then broke away, returning his attention to the now thoroughly soaked curtains and bin. No one had warned him about the new librarian, which was surely who this person was. There hadn’t been any other vacancies at the school this year, and unless Professor Sprout had suddenly taken to beauty potions... “I’m Thomas Barnes, professor of Divination. But you may call me Tom, the rest of the staff does.” His attention was still on the wreckage, studying it intently. As Effie took up the conversation again, Tom ended the charm and pocketed his wand, apparently satisfied that all was well again in the corridors of Hogwarts.
“Perhaps I’ll wait and see if any prefects come by with our arsonist. There’s no need to get Filch all riled up with no one for him to take it out on...” Thomas pulled his gaze from the mess, finally, to refocus his attentions on the new librarian and ask a question that had been nagging at him since she finished speaking. “I don’t think you look insane. Why would you think that?"
