Mycah Jane was the epitome of your average sixteen-year-old guy. Except for one small personality trait that left him out in some bizarre new territory of socialization. Mycah was a total and complete goofball. He cared less about what people thought of him and more about how he viewed everything else, which was almost always with an optimistic kind of curiosity. He was this sixteen-year-old five-year-old, essentially. And, although he had his moments of mild maturity and growth, he still loved his childish temperament too much to just let it go.
One of the only other people who had that same kind of outlook happened to be Mycah’s best friend in the whole world, Grace Davies. Mycah and Grace had met in their first year of school and have been thick as thieves ever since. The two have always been notorious for scheming up stupid plans and letting them unfold to their combined hearts’ content. People found these qualities both endearing and annoying. The two Hufflepuffs were much too often frowned upon for their antics, but it could never be argued that they were unhappy. Grace and Mycah had to be two of the most content teenagers at Hogwarts and that content disposition was all too effortless on both their parts.
It wasn’t surprising that, on a quiet and party-less Friday night, Mycah was found hauled up in the comfy Hufflepuff common room in his favorite corner. Mycah had that side-ways smile and carefree expression ready on his face. He knew Gracie would be there any moment. So, he did what he was generally accustomed to doing when Gracie was expected. Mycah ducked up into the boys’ dormitory and grabbed as many blankets as he could. He snagged them off the beds of his fellow dorm mates mercilessly, knowing they’d probably just end up joining him and Grace anyway. He rushed back down the steps like a firecracker and plopped his pile of blankets in his corner.
Mycah started skittering about the room like a squirrel on crack. He had this strange habit of letting his own energy take over. When Mycah had a mission, nothing could really stop him. And he was on a mission right then. His mission mostly involved taking chairs from all around the room and pushing them over to his corner. He actually picked up a 2nd year and set him on the floor so he could take the chair. The 2nd year looked baffled but was rather used to these kinds of antics out of Mycah. That was just the way of Mr. Jane and everyone knew it.
As soon as Mycah had his army of chairs assembled, he began draping the blankets over them in a haphazard and reckless fashion. He held his wand loftily in his hand and cast a few sticking charms here and there to keep his structure sufficiently upheld. After tugging at corners and finding confidence in his work, Mycah found his feet jetting back up the staircase. He flung open his trunk and began pulling out countless comics. Some were muggle super hero stories, others were little wizarding works, and then there were Mycah’s prized possessions, the comics he had drawn himself. Given, Mycah was no artist, or writer for that matter. He was just a guy who liked to laugh and enjoyed the little things in life, like making his own stick-figure comics.
Mycah shoved all his comics inside his fort and dragged the 2nd year boy over to stand guard in front of the dangerous looking structure. Mycah whispered something in his ear about being right back and he was in the kitchens before he could remember walking there. He was getting a thermos full of hot cocoa and several mugs and brownies and cookies and some kind of strange, fruit-cake looking thing that Mycah thought was simply hilarious. The house elves and Mycah got along like no one even knew! And then, he was wandering back into the Hufflepuff common as though he’d been there the whole time. He took his food haul and pushed it all inside the fort. He handed the 2nd year a brownie and told him he could come hang out in the fort any time he wanted. Now, all he needed was the famous Gracie Davies!!!! This was a regular Hufflepuff night in!

It had been a very busy day for Gracie, and her notebook was full of things she couldn’t wait to share with Rita! The school was abuzz with the latest gossip. The corridors still whispered things about Marlene McKinnon and Alice Logan losing their minds, attacking Bellatrix Black in the Great Hall. The Gryffindors had maybe, or maybe not, slipped a Ravenclaw into their common a few nights earlier! Drama at the seventh years’ secret NEWT study sessions! Has Amelia Bones also lost her mind? Romance was everywhere, of course! Dorcas and Ludo were back together, much to the disappointment of many of Dorcas’ friends. And Gracie was sure the Professors Barnes and Valter were going to announce their love for each other soon! She had an eye for romance! She just knew when people liked each other! Same with Hunter Rein and Alice Logan! Of course, he’d have to fight Frank for her... Again.
Not even the continued refusal of the suits of armour on the second floor to answer any of Gracie’s questions could dampen her sunny mood. Instead of pausing to grill them endlessly, as she had taken to doing during her free periods, Gracie merely skipped past with a quick, “Not tonight, boys! But I’ll be back tomorrow to hear all about tonight’s activity!” The Hufflepuff was half heartedly looking for Rita, but mostly she was making her way, rather slowly and with a great many detours, back to the Hufflepuff common room. Where, in spite of, or perhaps because of, the craziness around the rest of the school, the atmosphere was relatively laid back and relaxed.
Gracie could feel the change in the air as soon as she entered the Hufflepuff common room. She never wondered if the other common rooms felt so great, mostly because she wasn’t given to pondering much unless it involved at least one person, or at least a painting. To Gracie, Hufflepuff just seemed especially magical when compared to the rest of the castle. It was handy to the kitchens, of course, and most of Gracie’s favourite people resided there. Hufflepuffs made the best listeners, and most of them even managed to refrain from rolling their eyes when Gracie shared her stories. Sure, it always slipped her notice that some Hufflepuffs were messing with their dimmest member, sharing ridiculous tales while avoiding the disapproving stares of the prefects, because it was funny to see her tell the rest of the school. What mattered was their high level of friendliness!
It didn’t take long for Gracie to notice the blanket fort tucked away in the corner. “Ooh,” she squealed with delight, wasting no time running up the stairs to the girls’ dorms to drop off her notebook and slip out of her shoes. “Sorry, but I need this!” Gracie apologized to Fiona Jones as she tugged a blanket out from under her reading roommate. It was added quickly to a growing pile. On to the next bed! Her blanket was stripped off her bed next, then Saffy’s. Gathering them all up in her arms, Gracie half ran, half fell down the stairs, the blankets twisting themselves around her and tripping her up as she rushed back to the common room.
“Mycah, I have more blankets!” Gracie called as she spilled into the common room, all flying blonde hair and yellow duvets. “Excuse me!” she said giddily to the second year turned guard as she dropped to her hands and knees in front of the fort and crawled past him and inside, still dragging the blankets along with her.
“We have a floor!” Gracie announced proudly once inside, dropping the blankets so she could maneuver in and envelope Mycah in a hug that was at least half tackle. “It’s like a real home and everything now!”

music ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patrick drifted from the normally mundane task of charms and defense homework over to the equally dull divinations and ancient runes. His mind flew off in all directions while his body forced him to stay put in his chair, buttocks glued to the wood, quill doodling across his homework. His right leg bounced up and down rhythmically to the quick beating of his heart. His left forefinger tapped on the edge of his desk lightly. He wasn't paying attention, not in the least bit, and he hadn't been paying attention all class period. Patrick had an issue with normality. He had an issue with class work and lecture, with opening your book to chapter six, with turning in last weeks essay, and most certainly with answering the question now lingering in the air. He couldn't concentrate on things like muggle studies and dream diaries and the multitude of stars glittering in the night sky. And now, as the professor stared down at him, the whole class silent and waiting for his answer to "Which witch or wizard discovered the use of dragon's blood nearly one hundred years ago?", Patrick couldn't think of anything but jokes.
"Professor Mcgonagall?" Taking a stab at a beloved professors age wasn't the tip top of the best jokes list, but it did make the class laugh for the remaining two minutes of class. Just as everyone packed up to leave and before the professor could grab hold of his ear, Patrick was darting out the doorway. Class was finally over for the day, and he wanted nothing more than to bolt straight to the Hufflepuff common room for his game of exploding snaps. The usual gaggle of Hufflepuffs ranging from third to sixth years would most likely be drifting in ready to take the edge off, and Patrick looked forward to their mid-afternoon jokes and pranks. He wasn't a bad kid, nor an annoyance to any professor outside of creating a dull roar of laughter within their classroom, but he did have trouble coping with sitting still at any part of the day. Although his prefects badge glittered on his chest, a faint attempt by Dumbledore to make him more studious, Patrick and his friends would still find a way to have some fun.
He slipped into the common room, his hand stuck deep in his pockets, his mind for once focusing on the dormitory just a few feet away. He looked forward and walked passed the large tent set up across from the fire as if he hadn't seen it out of the corner of his eye. He had seen it, it just hadn't exactly sunk in yet. It didn't until he reached the steps leading to his trunk full of magical toys and candy, when he stopped and turned slowly. The blankets draped over the chairs, stuck with either the forces of gravity or someone's quick charms. They were a sea of yellow, black, gray, and the occasional Chuddley Cannons. He gave a laugh and nimbly walked forward, hoping to not disturb the beauty of it all, and Gracie's voice floated up above the crackling of the cozy fire. "It's not much of a home until you've got your favorite person in there! Make some room, I'm coming in!" The game of exploding snap flew out of his mind just as quickly as his latest homework assignment.

Mycah had always been thankful that he was a Hufflepuff. People always seemed to rag on the black and yellow lot of students, but Mycah knew that there was no where in this castle he would rather be than right there with his friends in their fort. Mycah knew that there was nothing like the memories he made with that group of people. So, when he was tackled by his best friend, Gracie, Mycah knew this would be another of the many amazing memories he would get to hold on to.
”Gracie, you’re a genius!” Mycah blurted out, an exclamation of excitement at all the blankets. And then, Patty Bones was there! Mycah’s grin seemed to stretch over his face even more. It was beginning, the people were arriving!!!! This fort was sure to get more and more entertaining by the second!
”Hey, hey, hey!!! Heeeyyyy Patty B!” Mycah chanted like some kind of strange little song. ”You are one of my favorite people!” He exclaimed enthusiastically! ”Look at that smile! We like you Patrick! We will keep you!” Mycah boomed. He rummaged about and presented the two with a display of delicious sweets. The brownies were his favorite. And he wore that look like a little kid who was so thrilled to just be there.

Ludo was in a bind. Who would have thought that being quidditch captain would be so much responsibility? On top of his practices with the Wasps, and all his course work, and time spent with Lainey, who was acting so bizarre lately. Probably NEWT stress... Maybe he should do something nice and get her some chocolate from Honeydukes or something? Women loved chocolate! Except he didn’t know her favourite kind... Time to ask someone she spent a lot of time with. Callie? Or Mar and Ollie? Whoever he ran into first? Sounds about right!
But wait, what had he been thinking about? Oh right, quidditch practice. He still didn’t have a keeper, thanks to how picky he had been at the try outs. But he wanted this to be Hufflepuff’s year! They had the best team they had in years, possibly the best team ever. With Ludo already signed, and Callie headed for the big leagues... Mycah Jane had some skill, Saffron Hale was just brilliant, and he couldn’t ask for a better beating partner than Jason Scamander. They didn’t need to be like Ravenclaw, they needed a keeper worth the rest of the team. Ludo didn’t want to spend matches making up for a terrible teammate. Unfortunately, it was coming to that. On top of his unfilled keeper position, his third chaser had randomly decided to quit the team, or take a break, or something. Ludo wasn’t sure what was going on, Sprout had just said she would be out of commission for the first game against Ravenclaw next week, and to look for someone willing to replace her for the rest of the year because it might come to that. Rumours were flying all over Hufflepuff about it. Fuelled by one, Miss. Gracie Davies, of course. Did she have dragon pox? Was she in St. Mungo’s? Rita would love the scoop! Of course Mouth would, it was something to take the heat of her and her terrible quidditch skills. No, not even skills. Her terrible playing? No, that wasn’t the right word either. Just her terrible quidditch. There was no skill or playing involved there in Ludo’s opinion.
Anyway, Ludo had been walking up and down the Hufflepuff table at meals, and badgering everyone in the evenings and during his free periods in the common room. He needed a good keeper, and a decent chaser, if they had any hope of beating Ravenclaw next week. Besides Mouth, their team was solid, if Kyndrick showed up sober, and at this point Ludo was thisclose to spiking her pumpkin juice himself. But hopefully it wouldn’t come to that.
Ludo was stalking the common room, obnoxiously pulling textbooks out of people’s hands to ask them if they had any quidditch skill. Family games in the backyard? Season passes to Pride games? Anything. It was all a bit desperate, but Ludo couldn’t afford any pride right now. He wasn’t about to forfeit a game because he couldn’t fill his team.
Which brings him to the fort in a little corner of Hufflepuff. Ludo had been living up to Hufflepuff’s animal by badgering Stacey Fischer, ‘I saw you fly in first year! I know you can do it. Now, can you do it and toss a quaffle?’ when he heard giggling and talking from under some blankets. At first he thought they might be doing something else... Actually, he still thought they might be doing something else, but he was going to barge in anyway. There were at least two people in there, who would be forced to listen to his pitch once he was blocking the door. Ludo walked over, crouched down, and flipped up the ‘door’, and scanned the faces of the people within.
Oh. Grace Davies, Mycah Jane, Patrick Bones. Sighing heavily, Ludo quickly came up with an excuse for intruding on their little game. “Mycah, tryouts... uhm, at some point. We need a new chaser.” He didn’t know much about Mellie’s youngest brother, but Ludo couldn’t afford to be picky right now. Unfortunately. He gave Patrick a once over, then, “Can you fly? If you can, let me know and we’ll set up a try out. Keeper or chaser, I don’t care, whatever you want to play.” He glanced at Gracie. The team wasn’t that desperate.
Not yet anyway.
He could afford to be slightly picky, right?
But he couldn’t leave without at least acknowledging her existence. She was nice, so Ludo nodded his head in her direction, not quite meeting her eyes because he felt a bit like an ass for not extending a try out invitation to her. “Hey Gracie...” He needed to buck up though! This was quidditch! Not some club where anyone who wanted to was allowed to join.
“Right. I’m just going to go now.” Ludo let the blanket drop closed as he moved on to his next victim. A group of girls studying for OWLS on the other side of the common room.
-------- 830 words for Hufflepuff!Ludo would sell a kidney for a full team right now.

Gracie positively beamed when Mycah called her a genius. No one had ever called her that before! She set to work arranging the blankets along the floor so they would all have something comfortable to sit on. It was too bad she didn’t have longer arms, or any sort of magical skill, because then she could have floated down her dormmates’ pillows! Surely Saffron and Fiona wouldn’t mind if they sat on their pillows for the evening? They could always summon them back if they needed to! Satisfied with her blanket arrangement, Gracie settled on a particularly fluffy blanket. “I love forts! This is so great, Mycah!” She was going to ask if anyone else was coming, but was interrupted by the entrance of another fantastic Hufflepuff.
“Patrick!” Gracie greeted the youngest Bones with enough happy energy to fuel several Cheering Charms. “Here, sit here!” she patted the seat next to her while simultaneously shifting her own position so she was further in the tent. There was enough room for everyone! And even if they had to squish in, well, that’s the whole point of a blanket fort! Just as long as they didn’t squish the food... Gracie was wasting no time tearing into the delicious assortment of snacks made available by Mycah. “I spent lunch talking to the suits of armour! I think they’re going to accept my friendship soon. But I think I’m going to be hungry in the meantime.” She could spend a free period or several with the suits of armour, but they were already booked up! One was spent chatting up the Giant Squid, and sometimes she hung out by the Whomping Willow, but not as much since Davey Gudgeon almost lost his eye... These days the other free periods were spent looking for that secret passage for Rita. It was so hard though! Mostly because Gracie often found herself spending most of the free period chatting to various paintings and promising to return to chat again! She barely ever got anything done.
Gracie had just bit off a large piece of cookie when Ludo invaded their little space. He was looking harried. Still trying to fill the quidditch team. It was too bad about that other chaser. Poor girl! She eyed Mycah while she chewed, looking for signs of dragon pox. It was highly contagious you know! The quidditch captain didn’t stay long, just long enough to talk about quidditch try outs and to pique Gracie’s interest. “Bye Ludo!” she called cheerfully, waiting about half a beat before rounding on Patrick. “Patrick! That is so neat! You and Mycah could be teammates! And I’d hold signs for you in the stands. Oh, maybe Professor Flitwick will help me with that hovering charm! Wingarden... Something. I can never remember! Why would I want my things to float? Except for this time! Because I’ll need my hands free to clap, but I’ll still want to hold signs! Just don’t get dragon pox!” Now it was Mycah’s turn to have Gracie’s undivided attention.
“Do you have a fever? Are fevers common with dragon pox? Do you have any green skin, Mycah? If it’s green you should go see Madam Pomfrey immediately!”

music ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Had Ludo Bagman just offered him a try out time for a spot on the Hufflepuff quidditch team? Whatever anyone had said or done before that moment was lost to Patrick, completely lost, because this was something more outrageous than wizard teenagers sitting in a handmade fort in the middle of the common room. Patrick Mitchell Bones in quidditch!? His hands flew to his sides, his mouth opened, he buckled over and laughed his heart out. He could never play quidditch. Not him, not smalls, not Patty the younger and dorkier version of Amelia. No Patrick was the guy you wanted on your wizards chess team. He was the guy you invited over to play gob-stones. He would even play table top games with the muggle children down the street when he was back home. But quidditch was never going to be his thing.
"Me!? Playing quidditch? Have...have you ever...heard anything so.. so... hilarious!" He stammered out between bursts of laughter, his breath escaping him, his sides already hurting. He looked over at Gracie, eyes still full of the laughter, and put a hand on her shoulder. "I won't be getting Dragon Pox Grace, I won't be out for the team. What kind of potential would he see in..me?" Patrick stopped laughing, his fantasies drifting away from him. For a moment he imagined himself clad in the black and yellow jerseys, walking onto the pitch and winking at two sixth year girls in the stands. They'd look at each other and giggle, hoping that if he won he'd finally come over and ask one of them out. But even in his fantasy Patrick had been too distracted by the possibility of a fantasy girl giggling over him that he had missed the kick off the ground. He flew up late and rushed to the goals, trying to make up for his late arrival with speed and power. Neither would do him any good as he hurdled through the posts. Now they were most certainly laughing at him, not giggling. Even his fantasies told the truth.
Patrick shrugged his shoulders and gave Mycah and Grace a look of self amusement. It had been funny while it lasted. "Anyway, how about some of Zonkos best!?" He almost jumped with excitement, pulled out his wand and stopped to concentrate. Patrick wasn't awful with spells, but he had just learned to summon things. He was trying to focus his brain, something that usually couldn't be done, on the brown paper bag filled with wizarding toys and charmed up muggle ones. There was also a few candied slugs and boxes of Bertie Botts sitting at the bottom of the bag. He wanted it all. Sitting at the bottom of his trunk, hovering between the door and the fort. He gave a flick, "Accio Zonkos Bag!" and crossed his fingers and toes within his black shoes hoping that the whizzing sound he now heard was his candy and jokes. If it wasn't, well who knew what could happen next...
