Gracie was having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Yes, it was so bad that it required several descriptors. It was not often that the sunny Gracie had an absolutely awful day, but when she did, they tended to be quite intense. Things just seemed to come to a head at once, and then tackle her until she was at the bottom of a dog pile.
It had all started this morning with a terrible mark on a Charms essay. At first, Gracie had been quite excited! A ‘P’ was infinitely better than a ‘D’! It was almost a pass! But Professor Flitwick had shaken his head sadly and asked her to meet with him after class, in that tone, and Gracie’s jubilant bubble had burst. He had told her that she would have to work harder to stay on topic, and that she would need some extra remedial classes. Gracie didn’t want to disappoint Professor Flitwick! He had been so nice to Gracie over the years, even though he wasn’t even her head of house! He worked with her so often to get her Charms mark up. She had felt quite upset.
Then, her sad mood was compounded by Rodolphus Lestrange shoving her in the hallway by the suits of armour. How rude! He hadn’t even apologized! And she had been in the middle of a conversation. She was making progress! Well, she had been. Rodolphus had been followed by Filch, who had shooed her away and informed young Gracie, nastily and with several choice words, that the suits of armour were not magic and could not talk. Furthermore, if he caught her near them again putting her grubby fingerprints all over them, well, he’d beg Dumbledore for some of the old punishments just for her. Quite scared, Gracie had scampered off outside to her favourite spot in all of Hogwarts.
It was quiet by the lakeside, for such a nice day anyway. But most students were in class. Gracie had the oddest free periods, thanks to her subpar grades in nearly every popular class. Her characteristic smile suspiciously absent from her face, Gracie sat as close to the edge of the lake as she could without actually being in the water. The giant squid was swimming in lazy circles, ignoring the Hufflepuff who was clapping her hands at him and calling him much like a dog. “Ivan! Ivan! Oh, Ivan! Please come and chat with me! I can’t find Rita or Mycah anywhere, and Filch is so mean, and Professor Flitwick is mad at me. I just know my father is going to send me a howler. Please turn back into a person and talk to me.”

Cas Cadwallader was a very special breed of obnoxious. Particularly when it came to a particular person, Grace Davies. Every time Cas spotted her, he felt this itching need to pick on her. She was just too easy, too gullible! He loved it! He had endless amounts of fun seeing how far he could push Gracie. And Gracie always thought he had good intentions, which he rarely ever did. That was just Cas for you, always wearing the worst intentions.
So, when Cas had snuck out of Astronomy class with a bathroom pass, he quickly found himself wandering the castle. This was a regular thing for him, ditching classes half way through and seeing where his boredom might carry him. He found a few mildly amusing scenarios, but nothing really grabbed his attention. Before he knew it, he was out on the lawns, dragging a long stick behind him as he walked and running a hand through his messy black hair every now and then. That was when he spotted Gracie beside the lake. She was yelling at what Cas had to guess was the giant squid. Being the Cas he was, he snuck up behind Gracie very quietly and then put his hands over her eyes.
”Guess who!” Cas whispered enthusiastically in her ear. He couldn’t help but grin. Who would she guess? Santa Clause? The Easter Bunny? Gracie always had strange answers, which was the only reason Cas played this little game with her more than anyone else.

“Okay, well, I guess you could just stay there, and I’ll talk to you anyway! Okay?” Gracie paused to wait for the Giant Squid’s answer. At that moment, he stopped drifting along and lazily pulled one tentacle out of the water, slapping the surface of the lake with it. Taking this as a positive answer, Gracie smiled tentatively. “Okay, thanks.” The Giant Squid decided at that very moment to dive, and Gracie’s smile faded. “That’s okay, Ivan. I understand. It must be awful to be an animagus that has to live in the lake. What if you wanted to go somewhere else? You’ll never be able to walk around the castle like Professor McGonagall. Does that make you sad, Ivan? I feel sad for you! That’s -”
Gracie was about to say terrible, but at that moment her world went black. Cas Cadwallader, playing games as per usual. He was the only person who ever put his hands over her eyes, and one would think by now that she would at the very least recognize his voice, but not at all. Gracie never, ever guessed properly, much to the continued amusement of Cas. “Ivan?” she squealed excitedly, “I knew you weren’t walking, er, swimming away from the conversation! You just had to go find your clothes!” Gracie grabbed Cas’ hands, and pulled them down so she could peer over them. Oh, but there was the Giant Squid, resurfacing. But that couldn’t be right... Confused, she turned to see who was behind her.
“Oh.” Gracie’s smile faded again, but not for long! From Gracie’s perspective, Cas had never been anything but extraordinarily nice to her! This was like having a real friend to talk to! “Hi Cas. Have you come to talk to the Giant Squid, too?”
