Coraline headed out to the grounds in order to be out for awhile. She was holding Twisler in her arms, and looked around as she stepped down the steps. There weren't that many people out yet since it was early morning. The courtyard was right were she headed to. It was a place that she always enjoyed hanging out at. Sitting down by one of the fountains, she gets out a bit of her homework to work on in the nice morning air.
Twisler lied down and stayed there beside her. All it was, was transfiguration homework, but it would be very long since it was an essay assignment. Professors were becoming harder on the students since it was the year that her year would have OWLS. The thought it was was rather unnerving, actually. Her brows furrowed and started to write the paper are general animal Transfiguration. She made sure it was on a smooth enough surface so it would not tear while she was in the process of writing stuff down.
Her ears listened to the surroundings around her, the chirping birds. It was honestly nice to be back in the courtyard, since Hogswarts was like a second home to her. Silently Twisler got up and started to go after a little bird. His bell started to tingle, giving him away to the birds trying to get the worms from the ground. "Twisler, leave the poor birds alone." Coraline said without even looking up from the essay that she was working on. The cat decided to settle down again right beside her, and purred very faintly as if to apologize.
The stub he had for a tail moved slightly back and forth, as if somewhat impatient now that birds were clearly out and about. His fur was a brilliant mix of gold and orange color, with three spots by his stub. It shone in the sunlight, showing that he was kept in very good health. He was Coraline's most precious belonging, she loved her cat more than anything in the world. Twisler she felt she could understand better than any human she interacted with.

That extremely ungraceful and silly happy dance Marlene had done in the middle of the great hall after picking her classes seemed like years ago. Had it really only been a week ago? Really? A week ago she had been so happy, no more potions, no more divination, no more history of magic. Now, Marlene was left floundering and slightly confused. Sixth year was hard. Surely this wasn’t how it was supposed to be. Fifth year was hard because of OWLS, and seventh year because of NEWTS. You were supposed to be able to goof off during sixth year! NEWTS were ages away!
Well, tell that to the mountains of homework Marlene was carting around the castle. The professors kept going on about wandless magic and she was almost one hundred per cent certain the astronomy professor had been looking directly at her when he went on and on about not slacking off and expectations. Well, that was a bit rude, wasn’t it? Just because she was a little late...
Expectations had been thoroughly shattered. It really did look like school was going to be an awful lot of work from here out. Marlene had already spent all of her free periods in the library, and after only a week she was already ready to use an unforgivable if it meant staying out of the library. Luckily, it didn’t have to come to such drastic measures. The drama queen that was Marlene’s inner monologue didn’t extend to her actions, thankfully. Well, usually anyway.
Escaping the library was as easy as packing up her mountain of homework, shoving it into her rucksack, and taking off for greener pastures – literally. It was a nice day, why not spend it on the rolling hills surrounding the castle, writing that charms essay? Not that she made it to the outside grounds. The court yard had looked so pretty as she walked by it that Marlene had changed her mind and decided to write there instead.
It was quite abandoned, but then, it was morning. Marlene recognized the girl on the stairs as a Gryffindor. She had seen her around in the common room and at the table during meals. She seemed to be pretty into her work, but Marlene offered her a friendly smile anyway as she settled a bit further along the fountain’s edge. It was the perfect spot. Or rather, it would be until the constantly flowing water forced Marlene to find a toilet. But she didn’t think about that, only about how pretty the sun looked and how the fountain’s edge was just wide enough for her to stretch out her work.

She continued on her work despite Twisler keeping at the birds. She looked up hearing someone come into the courtyard. That was a rather uncommon occurrence since it was early in the morning on the weekend. Usually students were either working on homework or asleep around this time. It was none other than Marlene, who was a sixth year. Of course the Professors didn't even ease up on the sixth years. They wanted to give people the best grades possible on the NEWTS. The student also did not find it surprising that a lot of students ended up disappointed due to this very fact. These years were optional, but she knew that pretty much everyone had to take them if they wanted any future at all in the magical world after taking the OWLS. Those tests were what pretty much determined life for a magical person.
At first she was unwilling to say anything to the other student, but then she spoke up a bit. "You know you could sit by me, there is plenty of room still." Her voice was a bit less comfortable around the student than it was around her cat. Coraline had never been gifted at interacting with fellow human beings. The girl looked back down to her essay, trying to focus on it as much as she could. Now was not the time to let her Professors down by getting overly distracted by her silly cat. Twisler stared at her in confusion as she quickly went back to writing the essay at full speed. Her quill flashed in front of him and he tried with every bit of might he could muster to not attack the feather on the quill pen. This was not his day though, and he ended up pouncing on it.
"Twisler, no bad!" Coraline seemed to have been ready and it appeared that her essay was unharmed. She shook her head at him and threw a toy mouse for him to play with. He went after it and she let out a sigh of relief. He rolled around with it in the grass, that being his favorite type of toy. The girl went back to writing her essay once again. It was at full speed and this time there would be no more distractions, at least that was what she hoped. It was something that she could not be so sure of now since Marlene was around. Marlene had never been the type to sit still, so she wondered what she would do. Maybe she would be perfectly quiet or just try to talk, which would be fine. One hope though was that she didn't try to look over her should or anything else like that.
If she looked she would be embarrassed as heck. The thought made her blush a bit and she kept on writing. It always felt like she just mashed something together. She just couldn't do more than one start without starting all over again. So Coraline did her best on the first try and didn't go at it again. The essays that she did were probably no good at all. In fact, she would except the older student to probably laugh at them and shatter Coraline's hopes over ever being a writer. Just the thought alone of that made her hide herself a bit in her essay and look even more focused that she had been even just writing it as quickly as she could.

Though Marlene couldn’t tell you a single thing about Coraline, save that she was most definitely a Gryffindor, which didn’t count because of the whole uniform thing, Coraline certainly knew a lot about Marlene. She was dead on about Marlene’s inability to stay still for very long. The girl was already shifting uncomfortably at the fountain, unable to find a position that didn’t quickly make her foot fall asleep, or put her arm at an angle too awkward to be useful for writing. It had to be the work. Marlene had spent hours at this fountain a few days ago, letting the running water serenade her as she had lazily enjoyed the fresh Scottish breeze passing through. Yes, the work was most definitely ruining the fountain.
Okay, it was crunch time. Marlene knew she had to find a position and stick with it, at least for a little while, or she’d be forced back inside for the remainder of the day. She straightened, fixing her skirt and vest, and tried a new tactic. She sat down on the grass beside the fountain, and folded her legs under her. The Gryffindor set her parchment on a spare textbook, resting both her work and her arm on the fountain ledge. There. Now she had a make shift bench, and a rather comfortable carpet of grass to rest on. She really should have tried this at first.
The Gryffindor had barely written an introduction to her charms essay when the other Gryffindor in the courtyard spoke up. The other girl’s existence had slipped Marlene’s mind. What was her name? Carol? Coral? Something that started with a C, of that much Marlene was certain. She had been sitting in a somewhat perpendicular position relative to Carol or Coral, and was forced to make a rather awkward turn of her upper body to address the younger girl. “Oh, that’s quite alright,” she grinned to Carol or Coral. She was oblivious to the fact that Coraline sounded distinctly uncomfortable, though that would have factored into her decision to stay put had she known. No, the only reason Marlene didn’t want to move was because she was lazy. Perhaps when her legs fell asleep or her arm cramped she’d pick a bench, but it was so deserted in the courtyard there wouldn’t be any reason to share one with another student. “The courtyard is so empty! We might as well enjoy having it all to ourselves!” And with that Marlene turned back to her essay.
Unfortunately, she was not to be left alone for long. The painfully easy to distract Marlene once again made her awkward turn to Carol or Coral as the other girl admonished what was probably her pet cat. Marlene couldn’t help but chuckle as the mischievous creature pounced on her parchment. She followed the cat with her eyes for a few seconds, enjoying watching him play with his toy. Marlene quite liked cats. She really wanted one for her own. Perhaps for Christmas or her birthday? For an animal lover, it was surprising that she didn’t own a cat or owl of her own. She fulfilled that need by showering affection on any animal she crossed in the common rooms or castle halls. And of course, there were always the fascinating and magical creatures in, what else, care of magical creatures class!
Marlene’s gaze trailed from the cat to Coraline, who was writing with a ferocity rarely seen. Marlene was quite empathetic. The poor girl, in her OWL year, probably, and with so much work, no wonder she wrote so fast. Marlene openly stared at Coraline, her own essay forgotten for a few seconds. She was focused, and it made Marlene wonder if she was actually working on school work. No one wrote a transfiguration or potions essay with such intensity! So, then, what was she writing? Not gossip, that was the forte of Rita Skeeter. Fiction? Marlene’s mind immediately went to adult fiction as Coraline hunched herself further over her work, in a move that Marlene was sure was meant to hide it from any onlookers. The quietest of Gryffindors writing smut fiction? Marlene tried to stifle her laughter at the very thought, but a few giggles escaped anyway. Surely not? Oh, but the very thought was so amusing that Marlene could only hope she was!
