You've seen it a hundred times before. The Wizarding World is in Chaos as Voldemort starts his first rise to power. You know what happened and what will happen, but what if we don't exactly go by all that? What if, taking all the information we get and build up these characters by, things could turn out differently? Of course, perhaps there are also a few little minor changes that could happen to change everything. Like the fight that ended Severus Snape and Lily Evan's friendship hasn't happened yet. Arianna Dumbledore wasn't killed in a tragic accident.Teachers could even have been teaching completely different classes or even not even been teaching during this time! There is also the horrible mishap with the Veil in the Death Chamber began to spit dead people out that were better left dead...increasing Voldemort's chances of winning the war. Though, it wasn't necessarily people who had fallen into the veil, it was people who had been dead and had never passed into the light. This means, some of those ghosts that had died and haunted Hogwarts. Ministry is trying to destroy the Veil now, since they don't understand why this is happen.
Anything could happen, the results could end up quite horribly wrong.
The life of a student can be hard on a normal basis, but with the war already happening you also have extra dueling lessons and more safety precautions than Hogwarts has ever had. The students are being taught how to defend themselves and while Quidditch is still played, it isn't the most popular sport anymore. What does tossing around balls have to compete against Wizarding Duels where you get to use your wand to attack your opponent and defend yourself in a way that will help you later in life?
